A former Ivory Coast international has publicly advised Junior Dion to leave Lamontville Golden Arrows. Badra Ali Sangare, a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winner, believes the striker is ready for a move to a bigger team, preferably outside South Africa.

Sangare pointed to Dion's five years in the country and his status as last season's Betway Premiership top scorer with 14 goals as proof of his readiness. The 27-year-old Ivorian-Chadian forward has started the current campaign with two goals in six appearances for an Arrows side sitting eighth in the Premier Soccer League with eight points from seven games.

Sangare's advice

"I think it is the right time for him to go to a big team because he has now adapted to South African football," Sangare said. "He knows the league, so I think now is the right time to go to a big team."

The former goalkeeper emphasised the financial realities of a short career. "When I have a chance to talk to him, I think I’ll advise him to go outside South Africa," he added. "You know this thing is about money. If you get better money somewhere, you must go because in football you never know."

Sangare also stressed the importance of ambition.

Dion's recent history

Dion's desire for a move is not new. Before the current season began, he pushed for a transfer and reported late for pre-season training amid links to Emirati side Al Wasl FC. He arrived in South Africa in August 2021 from Botswana's Jwaneng Galaxy, initially signing for Marumo Gallants before spells at AmaZulu FC and now Golden Arrows, where he is in his second season.

His form has been strong, with four goals in nine matches across all competitions this term and a notable record of five goals in his last five outings against champions Mamelodi Sundowns. The team's recent form has been mixed, with a goalless draw against Kaizer Chiefs last weekend following a 1-1 draw with Siwelele. Arrows next face fifth-placed Milford FC at home on 17 October.

Current season context

His performances have been a bright spot for a Golden Arrows side that has struggled for consistency, managing just two wins in their opening seven league fixtures.
