Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Daniel Matsau believes that Langelihle Phili is the best player to replace Glody Lilepo. His opinion comes after noticing the winger’s growth and development in a recent campaign.
Following Amakhosi's loss to Scotland FC in a Toyota Cup match, Matsau shared his thoughts regarding the team's current attacking lineup. He admitted he was dissatisfied with their performance especially concerning the number of chances created for other players:
"My only concern with the current Chiefs team is upfront; that's what I noticed yesterday during their 1-0 win over Scotland FC," he clarified.
Matsau believes in Phili's potential to create goals and assist others at a very young age. He adds that Lilepo, another former winger for Amakhosi, had the skills needed on that front, hence his faith in him carrying that role again:
‘One of the best qualities Lilepo brought with him was taking defenders’ on-ones; we need someone like that to create chances and scoring goals. I’m actually praying Chiefs manage to sign him,' he concluded.
The forward is not entirely dismissive of Glody Lilepo, as Matsau admits his departure is a loss for the club. He suggests Phili's arrival can fill those blanks seamlessly in Da Cruz’s team with players like Velebayi complementing each other and adding their strengths to the equation:
‘He (Phili) might help us; our strikers are of a good quality, but we may need people that will feed them balls. What I like about Phili is the fact he can take on defenders and also scores goals.’
This sentiment has now surfaced from former stars in an environment where investment in young talent seems to be increasing for teams looking to compete at a higher level.
With Lilepo's departure, Matsau’s message is clear: Phili represents potential value for the club in terms of skills needed while also maintaining quality as he comes off two season with a promising career trajectory.
